The Japanese occupy the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch population of the colony are interned in camps, where many perish. Many male prisoners die as a result of forced labour on the Burma-Siam railway. During the occupation, Japan exercises economic and political power over the whole archipelago. The Japanese work hand in glove with indigenous nationalists, among whom Sukarno is particularly prominent.
